Narcissu
A 16th century CE oil painting by Caravaggio depicting Narcissus the handsome youth of Greek mythology who fell in love with his own reflection. (Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica, Rome)

Narcissus, which defined a beautiful youth in Greek mythology who pines away for love of his own reflection and is then turned into the narcissus flower.

The myth of Narcissus comes in two different versions,  both Conon the Greek and Ovid, the Roman poet, wrote the story of Narcissus, enhancing it with different elements.

According to Ovid, Narcissus was born in Thespiae in Boeotia, the son of Cephissus (the personification of the Boeotian river of the same name) and the Liriope. He was distinguished for his beauty. Metamorphoses , Book III, Narcissus's mother was told by the blind seer Tiresias that he would have a long life, provided he never recognized himself. However, Narcissus cruelly refuses the advances of the Echo or (in Conon the Greek version) of the young man Ameinias drew upon him the vengeance of the gods.He fell in love with his own reflection in the waters of a spring and pined away (or killed himself); the flower that bears his name sprang up where he died.

The content of the two stories is not much different. They have traditionally been interpreted as a warning against pride and self-love. The key factor in the whole story is water. Because water has the effect of reflecting light like a mirror, Narcissus will see his own reflection. The light and shadow changes in the legendary are very interesting, we know any human body liberated by the confinement of gravity feels displaying a brighter mirrored image than the original one. So finding the right and dynamic equilibrium, to be secure and yet to dissociate. The legend also embodies the power consciousness (self-love) and human aesthetics, which is the characteristics of ancient Greek architecture.
